Jean and Robert Torrey, a salesman, had a daughter named Betty Jeanne. She grew up in the Blauvelt neighbourhood of New York City.

“My sister was the kind of person who assumed the best about people and then found out the truth when it was too late,” one of the siblings told New York Magazine.
Betty Jeanne began her education at SUNY New Paltz after graduating from Tappan Zee High School in 1966. She had intended to marry her high school boyfriend, but fate had other plans for her, and her fiancé was killed in a car accident.

She began dating Paul Solomon later on.
Paul was stationed in the Air Force in Alaska, so the pair married in Nyack in 1970. Kristan, their first daughter, was born in 1973.

They moved back to New York and settled in Harrison. Paul was hired as a teacher at Greenville Elementary School in Edgemont.
Solomon met Carolyn Warmus, a 23-year-old fellow teacher, in September 1987. They started having a relationship. Betty Jeanne was no stranger to Warmus; according to New York Magazine, she took Kristan skiing in 1988.

Solomon and Warmus drank cocktails at a neighborhood place after years of affair, followed by sex in a car. When Solomon arrived at their Greenburgh home at 11:45 p.m., Betty Jeanne, 40, was dead on the floor. The Chicago Tribune reported in 1991 that she had been shot nine times in the back and arms.

The primary suspect at the beginning of the investigation was Solomon; however, detectives later learned of Solomon and Warmus’ involvement and found them guilty of second-degree murder in the death of Betty Jeanne.
