Sony To Offer Free Horizon Forbidden West PS4 to PS5 Upgrade After Backlash
In what appears to be one of Sony’s fastest reversals, Horizon: Forbidden West will offer a free upgrade for PS4 owners to the PS5 version. The decision comes after last week’s price reveal for the various editions of the game, along with the shocking absence of any meaningful upgrade path for the PS4 version of the game to the PS5 version. Previously, if players wanted both versions of the game, then they would have to buy the digital deluxe edition of the game.
“Last year we made a commitment to deliver free upgrades for our cross-gen launch titles, which included Horizon Forbidden West,” said Jim Ryan, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment in an update on the PlayStation blog.
“While the pandemic’s profound impact pushed Forbidden West out of the launch window we initially envisioned, we will stand by our offer: Players who purchase Horizon Forbidden West on PlayStation 4 will be able to upgrade to the PlayStation 5 version for free.”
While the reversal on Horizon: Forbidden West’s next-gen upgrade pricing is nice, the game is still being sold under two different SKUs for PS4 and PS5, both with different prices. Horizon: Forbidden West on PS4 costs Rs. 3,999 while the PS5 version costs Rs. 4,999 despite the free upgrade. With that, there appears to be an obvious loophole where anybody can save the Rs. 1000 by purchasing the PS4 version and upgrading it for free.
Sony hasn’t commented on the same, so it looks like the company might be biting the bullet on selling fewer units for the physical PS5 copies. At the very least, Sony India is well aware of consumer demands for better pricing in the country.
The decision comes after Sony promised to provide free cross-gen upgrades for its PS5 launch titles last year. While Horizon: Forbidden West was originally set to release in late 2021, it was recently delayed to February 2022 making it and other titles such as the next God of War and Gran Turismo 7 well beyond the launch window of the console.
