Call of Duty: Vanguard May Be the First of a New Trilogy

Call of Duty: Vanguard’s writers are hoping to tell more stories about the characters in Vanguard in their own sequels. Sam Maggs, one of the writers on Vanguard, touched on the possibility of the game getting direct sequels in a panel at New York Comic Con (spotted by VGC).

“We came into this process saying ‘how do we make iconic CoD characters’ because we don’t really have that in Call of Duty right now,” she said. “We came into this being like, ‘who could be our flagship CoD characters’ because we want to make Vanguard 2 and Vanguard 3. We have two more stories that we really want to tell with these characters, so we’re hoping that if people love them as much as we do, we get to continue to tell the story of these people and make them figureheads for this era of CoD.”

The focus on new and unique characters is certainly at the forefront of Vanguard. As we learned recently from the game’s new story trailer, the campaign will feature five playable characters who form an international squad toward the end of World War 2.

Call of Duty: Vanguard developer Sledgehammer Games revealed how the campaign will focus on the formation of Task Force One as well as focus on the international “Special Forces” with players experiencing WW2 from the perspectives of multiple members of the team. Should Vanguard’s campaign receive unanimous praise, it’s possible that it will spinoff into its own trilogy.

With Black Ops and Modern Warfare, Call of Duty has two continuous shared story threads that build on top of each other in distinct time periods. Vanguard could become its own thread giving the franchise a third continuity where all three sub-franchises could attract different kinds of audiences, with Warzone bridging the gap between all of them, as it already is.

Call of Duty: Vanguard launches on November 5 for PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One. IGN India tried out the closed and open betas of Call of Duty: Vanguard on PS5. Check out what we think about the game so far.
